Nicholas and Victoria climbed the Shira Route, including a night in the Crater Camp, and they opted for the ‘full monty’ of outlandish luxury on Mount Kilimanjaro, including walk-in sleeping tents, hot shower services and a heated lounge tent!
The ‘Shira’ in the route name refers to the Shira Plateau, the earth’s second highest plateau, averaging about 3,800m. The first few days of this trek offer a gentle introduction to Kilimanjaro, giving a chance to acclimatize to the altitude without over-stressing the body. The night in the Crater Camp offers an up-close experience with Kilimanjaro’s dwindling glaciers and enables an experience of the mountain in a way that so few others do.
